EMG/NCS ? ? What is an Electrodiagnostic test (EMG/NCS)? ? This test is composed of 2 parts. ? 1)? The first part is the nerve conduction study (NCS).? This will?? ???? evaluate how well the nerves are sending signals to each other. 2)? The second part is the electromyography (EMG).? This will ???? evaluate the muscles which the nerves supply. ? Why did your doctor order this test? ? An EMG/NCS is a test that your doctor may order to evaluate for potential nerve injury, pain syndromes, neurologic problems or muscle problems.? ? What can I expect during this test? ? The NCS will feel like an electrical impulse. The EMG portion uses a small needle to evaluate the muscles. ? Do I need to stop my medications? ? Please let your doctor know if you are on Coumadin (warfarin) or Plavix (clopidegral) as these should be stopped prior to the EMG if ok with the prescribing doctor.? Otherwise you can continue on all your medications. ? Also let your doctor know if you have a pacemaker. ? Also do not use any lotions the day of the procedure. ? Minimize the amount of rings and bracelets worn, as these will need to be removed. ? How long will the test take to finish? ? The test will usually take between 30 and 60 minutes. Please ensure that you arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment. ? A report will be sent to your referring physician with the results. ?
